From brochures to boxes: moving into packaging and labels
Commercial print volumes keep shrinking while packaging keeps growing, and roughly four in ten commercial printers are already adding label or packaging capability. Here are the realistic entry paths, what changes on the shop floor, and why Vietnam's packaging boom makes the timing right.
The long-term arithmetic of commercial print is not kind. Brochures, catalogues and corporate collateral — the bread and butter of most sheet-fed shops — keep migrating to screens, and each economic wobble accelerates the shift. Packaging moves the opposite way: e-commerce, modern retail and consumer-goods manufacturing all need physical boxes, cartons and labels, and no app replaces them. Industry surveys consistently find around 40% of commercial printers adding label or packaging capability, a figure best read as guidance but one that matches what equipment dealers across Asia report seeing on the ground.
For printers in Vietnam specifically, the demand side is unusually strong. Manufacturing FDI keeps landing, food and beverage exporters need compliant retail packaging, and thousands of small domestic brands — coffee, cosmetics, snacks, supplements — are launching products that need short-run cartons and labels long before they reach volumes any offset converter wants. A commercial printer often already holds the relationship: the brand that buys your brochures also buys packaging from someone, and would usually rather buy it from you.
